About The Event
Information and Materials
I love looking back through my travel journals as they help me remember the small things that are so easily forgotten. Each one is like a mini time machine which transports me back to a happy place and ignites all of my senses...I can smell the sea salt and chips on the breeze!
After years of experimenting and struggling with travel journaling, I've devised a really simple 'recipe' system which makes keeping an illustrated holiday diary really easy, allowing you to get creative, have fun and lose the fear! The techniques in this class are also very quick and fun to do so you're more likely to keep it going throughout your holiday.
The workshop is run over two consecutive weeks and during this time you will learn everything you need to know to get started. You will learn about materials, layout, lettering, content and image (including some easy and effective drawing techniques for beginners) in a managable and paired down sort of way. All you need is a few basic tools and techniques...(plus a few of the brilliant cheats that I'm SO excited to share with you!)
The aim of this class is to simplify the complicated decision making process which is creating a travel journal. I have identified all the pinch points and ironed them out creating a simple and easy to use system that you can use time and time again!
This workshop is suitable for all experience levels and particularly suitable for complete beginners
The workshop runs over two weeks and is live on Zoom with a recording
- Thursday 9th June 7-9pm BST
- Thursday 16th June 7-9pm BST
Materials
- 2 x Fine liners (waterproof, a variety of nib sizes is good or one big and one small. Nib size 0.5 or 0.8 is big AND a pen with a nib size 0.1mm or smaller if possible such as 0.05mm) in black or brown
- 2 x Pencils 6B and HB
- A water soluble pencil in a neutral colour (this could be from a watercolour pencil set you already own. If you are buying one I recommend a Derwent Graphitint. Pick a colour you like...I have Steel Blue, Russet and Storm which are all really nice!)
- Eraser and Sharpener
- You will need two sketchbooks to journal in *but* I recommend NOT buying anything until you have taken part in the first week's class. We will be discussing what is best and I will share a few brands and sizes that make good travel journals.
- An A4 or A5 pad of smooth, heavy weight cartridge paper (plus a few sheets of cheaper printer paper)
- A basic set of watercolour paints
- Mixing palette or china plate
- Water pot,
- Brushes (round pointed, a selection of sizes is good and I'd recommend sizes 4 and 8) OR a waterbrush which is great for travel journaling
- Coloured pencils (if you don't have any please don't buy them especially as we will discuss the options in class including creating a limited palette of very few colours. All of these can be purchased individually rather than spending a lot on a huge set)
- Scissors
- Glue Stick
- Optional: Scraps of paper, old maps, paper washi tape
After both workshops have taken place, this class will be uploaded to your personal library so you can access it and rewatch as many times as you like. Create an account by selecting the free doodlebird workshop here
